A consortium comprising China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) and global technology leader Siemens has been awarded a contract by Iraq to refurbish Unit Two of the Baiji gasoline energy station.
The Baiji facility, a major gas power plant with a capacity of 1.6GW, is slated for completion in 2026. Under the terms of the agreement, CSCEC will serve as the principal contractor and will also finance the refurbishment. Siemens will be responsible for supplying key equipment, including turbines, transformers, and control centers.
The scope of CSCEC’s work includes the installation of auxiliary components such as fire protection systems, piping, and various civil engineering tasks.
The 1.6GW power station, located in Salahuddin province, was a significant electricity supplier for Iraq before it was damaged and taken out of operation by Islamic State militants in 2014. Unit Two, which had a capacity of 1GW, was commissioned in the same year.
In 2019, Iraq’s Council of Ministers launched a $1.3 billion rehabilitation initiative and signed a contract with Siemens and Egyptian contractor Orascom. The refurbishment project is set to commence next year and is expected to be completed by 2026.
