Isha Ambani: Thank you for having me. For me, it’s about making a meaningful impact. I’ve always believed in the power of business to drive change, not just economically but socially as well. At Reliance Retail, my goal is to create value across the board—whether it’s for our customers, employees, or the communities we serve. My upbringing, where both business and philanthropy were deeply valued, has influenced this approach.
Interviewer: You’ve played a pivotal role in the growth of Reliance Retail, particularly with AJIO and the expansion into global brands. What has been your strategy for driving this growth?
Isha Ambani: The key has been to remain customer-focused while staying ahead of market trends. When we launched AJIO, the idea was to create a platform that not only provided a wide range of fashion options but also resonated with the evolving tastes and preferences of the modern Indian consumer. For our global brand partnerships, like with Gap and Armani, it’s about bringing world-class experiences to Indian consumers. We’re focused on scaling up while ensuring that quality and customer satisfaction remain at the core of everything we do.
Interviewer: Reliance Retail has seen remarkable success under your leadership, with a significant increase in turnover and market presence. How do you manage the pressure that comes with leading such a large enterprise?
Isha Ambani: It’s certainly a responsibility I take very seriously. Leading a company of this scale requires a combination of strategic vision, operational excellence, and a strong team. I’m fortunate to work with some of the best minds in the industry who share my vision. Additionally, I rely on continuous learning—whether from past experiences, mentors, or even the challenges we face along the way. Staying grounded and focusing on the long-term goals helps manage the pressure.
Interviewer: Beyond business, you’re also heavily involved in philanthropy through the Reliance Foundation. How do you balance these two roles?
Isha Ambani: I see them as interconnected rather than separate. The success of our business allows us to give back to society in a meaningful way. Through the Reliance Foundation, we’re able to address critical issues like education, healthcare, and women’s empowerment. I believe that business can be a powerful tool for social change, and that’s what drives me to balance both roles. It’s about creating a legacy that goes beyond profits.
Interviewer: Speaking of legacy, your work with the Reliance Foundation has impacted millions of lives in India. Can you share some of the initiatives that are close to your heart?
Isha Ambani: One initiative that stands out is our work in healthcare, particularly with the Braille newspaper project and supporting cornea transplants. We’ve also focused on empowering women through various programs that provide education and job opportunities. Another area is mental health awareness, which is still a stigmatized issue in many parts of India. By working with communities and using our platform to raise awareness, we aim to make a real difference.
Interviewer: You were recently recognized with the GenNext Entrepreneur Award and have been listed among the Most Powerful Upcoming Businesswomen of Asia. How do these recognitions influence your work?
Isha Ambani: Awards and recognitions are humbling, and they serve as a reminder of the responsibility I have to continue pushing the boundaries. They motivate me to keep innovating and to strive for excellence in everything I do. However, I also see them as a reflection of the incredible team I work with and the shared vision we have for the future of Reliance Retail and our philanthropic efforts.
Interviewer: Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for Reliance Retail and your role in shaping the company’s future?
Isha Ambani: My vision for Reliance Retail is to continue leading the way in transforming the retail landscape in India. We want to create a seamless, integrated experience for our customers, blending online and offline channels. We’re also focusing on sustainability, ensuring that our growth is aligned with environmental and social responsibility. Personally, I’m excited about expanding our global footprint and exploring new opportunities that will define the future of retail in India and beyond.
Interviewer: Finally, what advice would you give to young women aspiring to follow in your footsteps in the business world?
Isha Ambani: I would say, believe in yourself and don’t be afraid to take risks. The business world can be challenging, but it’s important to stay focused on your goals and be resilient in the face of obstacles. Surround yourself with people who inspire and support you, and never stop learning. Most importantly, remember that success isn’t just about reaching the top; it’s about making a positive impact along the way.
